Childrens dentistry

We take pride in ensuring the younger generation are educated and given the correct treatment to keep their teeth and oral hygiene healthy long into their elder life.

As dental professionals, who also have children, we understand the importance of providing a safe and friendly place that  encourages children to be positive about attending their dental appointments. At Kings Dental Practice we believe we provide that secure environment – leaving children with smiles.

Preventative dental care is important and encourage our patients to bring their children as soon as their first tooth can be seen. Regular dental checks from a young age will ensure children won’t suffer from untreated dental decay, and oral hygiene, which often has a negative impact on growing teeth and hygiene. Treating a child from an early age also allows the dentist to spot early signs of underbites, crossbites or overbites developing. As with most things, the sooner we can start to treat any potential problems, the quicker they can be resolved.

Top tips for parents/guardians

  1. Brush twice a day: keeping teeth clean by regular brushing helps prevent decay. Children’s brushing should be supervised until the age of seven. Ask your dentist for more advice.
  2. Use a fluoride toothpaste: all children up to three years old should use a toothpaste with a fluoride level of at least 1000ppm, both morning and night. From three to six years old, their toothpaste should contain more than 1000ppm. For children six years and older, the recommended amount is between 1350ppm-1500ppm.
  3. Visit the dentist on a regular basis: ask your dentist how often you should visit and keep your appointments, if oral health problems are spotted early, then they can often be dealt with much easier. Your dentist can answer any questions you have about the best way to look after your child’s teeth.
  4. Watch out for ‘hidden’ sugars: pure fruit juices can be a healthy choice, but the natural sugars these contain can still damage teeth. If you are offering fruit juice, drink it with a meal and only in a small glass (up to 150ml).
  5. Reduce sugary snacks: the risk of developing tooth decay increases as the amount and frequency of sugar consumption rises.

Benefits of attending the dentist early

  • Establishing a dental rapport. Having a rapport is important for prevention, treatment, and referral services to support proper oral health. When a child starts to see a dentist in infancy, by the time that child is 3, a positive relationship has formed. Easing a child in to the dental setting is much easier when it is for prevention.
  • Break the pattern of dental decay. Diet, nature of the bacteria, and prenatal factors contribute towards cavities and other dental related issues. Kids that have many cavities at an early age are classified as high risk even when prevention is available. Early regularly intervention can prevent cavities.
  • Habit discussion. Habits such as late age pacifier usage and finger sucking can have serious effects if continued. Discussing habits with parents when children are in their infancy, allows parents time to properly plan on when to move the child away from their habits. A slow change of the habit works better than having to abruptly stop a habit.
  • Care in case of Trauma. Children take falls, accidents happen, if there is a dental related emergency, the dentist is always available for evaluation and treatment. This becomes much harder to find if a doctor-family rapport is still to be formed.
